Industrial noise complaints: how the process works, from measurement to resolution

Industrial noise complaints often involve multiple potential sources operating simultaneously — machinery, ventilation, compressors, pumps and more. Resolving them requires a structured approach: measure, identify, and then act on what the data shows.

1. Measure the overall noise level

The first step is to establish the measured noise level at the receptor location — for example, at a neighbouring residential property where the complaint was made. This determines whether the noise exceeds applicable limits and provides a baseline for the investigation.

2. Identify the dominant sources

If the measured level is excessive but several machines are running at once, an acoustic camera investigation can pinpoint which equipment is contributing most. The acoustic camera visualises and ranks the individual noise sources, so you know exactly where to focus noise-reduction effort.

3. Recommend and verify

Based on the findings, practical noise-reduction measures are recommended — which could involve enclosure, damping, maintenance, or operational changes. A follow-up measurement or acoustic camera scan can then verify that the implemented measures have achieved the intended reduction.
